The first picture of Noah is an extra passport photo I carry around in my wallet. It was taken about a year ago and it only comes out of my billfold when relatives or new friends ask what he looks like. It's cute. He looks a little awkward with his half smile and scraggly hair, but I always think it represents him well.
The other day Noah's visa application was sitting on the kitchen table. The bottom photo was attached to the application and when I first saw it I almost didn't recognize him. He looks confident and reassured. Some of the boyish charm has melted away and I don't know what has replaced it. It leaves me wondering how much he is going to change in the next year while he is in Japan. Will I be able to see a decided difference when he gets back?
A year seems so brief these days, but I think of time more critically when I look at these photos. Hopefully we will just be more defined versions of ourselves.
